IPO Allotment — Complete Guide
When is IPO Allotment Done?
IPO allotment is done approximately 6 days after the IPO closing date. The allotment basis is decided by the registrar and announced on BSE and NSE websites. Shares are credited to your demat account on the allotment date.
How is IPO Allotment Decided?
For retail investors, if the IPO is oversubscribed, allotment is done by computerised lottery. Each retail applicant (per PAN) gets an equal chance of receiving exactly 1 lot. Applying for more lots does not increase your chances. Allotment is done at the IPO issue price — no discount for retail in most cases.
What Happens if You Don't Get Allotment?
If you don't receive allotment, the blocked funds (ASBA) are released back to your bank account within 1-2 working days after allotment date. The 1% TDS deducted by exchanges is refunded along with the blocked amount.
Increase Your Chances of IPO Allotment
- Apply from multiple family members' accounts (each with separate PAN)
- Apply on Day 1 or Day 2 — avoid last-minute UPI mandate issues
- Use a demat account with good track record (some argue this helps)
- Apply for exactly 1 lot in retail category — more lots don't help
