How to Buy Gold Online in India — Digital Gold, ETF or SGB?

Buying physical gold from a jeweller is the traditional way. But it comes with real headaches — you have to store it safely, worry about purity, pay making charges, and take it somewhere when you want to sell. Online gold buying options have made this much simpler, but there are three different ways to do it, and each works differently.

Option 1: Digital Gold

Apps like PhonePe, Paytm, Google Pay and MMTC-PAMP let you buy digital gold starting from just ₹1. When you buy, the equivalent amount of physical gold is stored in a vault on your behalf. You can sell it anytime and get the money in your account.

Pros: Start with tiny amounts, instant buy/sell, 24K purity, no storage worry.

Cons: Storage charges after 5 years on some platforms, no regulation by SEBI (it's not a formal financial product), and the gold is held by private companies.

⚠️ Digital gold is convenient but less regulated than ETFs or SGBs. Stick to established platforms like MMTC-PAMP or SafeGold. Avoid random apps offering gold.

Option 2: Gold ETF (Exchange Traded Fund)

Gold ETFs trade on the stock exchange (NSE/BSE) just like shares. Each unit represents roughly 1 gram of 24K gold. You need a demat account to buy them. Popular Gold ETFs in India include Nippon Gold ETF, HDFC Gold ETF and SBI Gold ETF.

Pros: SEBI-regulated, transparent pricing, easy to buy/sell, no storage issue, no making charges.

Cons: You need a demat account, there's a small expense ratio (0.5-1% per year), and you can't convert them to physical gold easily.

Option 3: Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB)

SGBs are government bonds that are linked to gold price. The RBI issues them periodically. When you buy an SGB, you get the gold price appreciation plus 2.5% interest per year. And if you hold till maturity (8 years), there's zero capital gains tax.

Pros: 2.5% annual interest on top of gold returns, no GST, zero tax on maturity, fully government-backed.

Cons: 8-year lock-in (though you can sell on exchange after 5 years), issued in specific windows (not always available), limited flexibility.

For most people, SGBs are the best long-term gold investment if you don't need the money for 8 years. Gold ETFs are better if you want flexibility. Digital gold is fine for very small amounts or gifting.
