🪙 Why Do Gold Prices Change Daily?
Gold prices in India change every day based on 4 key factors:
- International Spot Price — Gold trades globally as XAU/USD on COMEX. When the dollar strengthens, gold dips and vice versa.
- USD/INR Exchange Rate — A 1% move in USD/INR changes Indian gold prices by approximately ₹1,500 per 10 grams.
- Import Duty — India charges 6% (BCD + AIDC) on gold imports. This is a major reason Indian gold is expensive vs UAE.
- Local Jeweller Margins — IBJA sets benchmark rates but jewellers add their own margin of ₹200-500 per 10g.
🌍 Gold Rate: India vs UAE
UAE gold is typically 5-8% cheaper than India because UAE has zero import duty on gold. India charges 6%+ making it significantly more expensive.
Dubai's gold souk is one of the world's largest gold markets. Many NRIs buy gold in UAE and bring it to India within duty-free limits.
🧮 22K vs 24K — Which to Buy?
24K (999.9 purity) — Pure gold. Best for investment, coins and bars. Too soft for jewellery.
22K (916 purity) — Standard for jewellery in India. BIS Hallmarked. Durable and widely accepted.
18K (750 purity) — For designer jewellery with diamonds or gemstones.
📋 How to Apply for an IPO in India — Step by Step
Applying for an IPO in India is simple and takes less than 2 minutes through your broker app:
- Step 1: Open a Demat + Trading account with a SEBI-registered broker (Zerodha, Groww, Upstox, Angel One)
- Step 2: Go to IPO section in your broker app → Select the IPO you want to apply for
- Step 3: Choose lot quantity and enter your UPI ID
- Step 4: Approve the mandate in your UPI app — funds are blocked, not debited
- Step 5: Wait for allotment — if not allotted, funds are released immediately
⏰ Always apply before 5 PM on the closing day. Last-day applications sometimes face UPI congestion — apply early!
🔥 What is IPO GMP?
Grey Market Premium (GMP) is the unofficial price at which IPO shares trade before the official listing on NSE/BSE.
Example: IPO price = ₹300, GMP = +₹60 → Expected listing ≈ ₹360 (+20%)
GMP is not guaranteed — it reflects market sentiment. High GMP = high demand but doesn't guarantee listing gains.
📊 Gold vs IPO — Where to Invest?
Gold — Safe haven, low risk, good for long-term wealth preservation. Ideal during uncertainty.
IPO — High risk, high reward. Some IPOs give 50-100%+ listing gains. Requires research.
Smart strategy: Keep 10-15% in gold as a hedge, rest in equity/IPOs based on risk appetite.
